A Night for Miriam Reynolds

The Miriam Reynolds Breast Cancer Research Foundation

Judge-Miriam-Reynolds

The Miriam Reynolds Foundation will be launched on Saturday, 7th of November 2009 at a gala dinner in the Law Society, Blackhall Place. The evening will commence with a champagne reception at 730 in The Blue Room followed by dinner at 8.30pm.

Those of us who had the privilege of knowing Miriam will appreciate what an extraordinarily fine woman she was. In addition to being a loving wife to Frank, and a wonderful mother to her sons, Darragh & Cillian, Miriam also had a highly accomplished professional career, which included a successful Bar practice and ultimately, elevation to the Bench in 2002. During her career as a Judge, Miriam developed a fine reputation as a clear-minded, compassionate and highly professional Jurist.

What many people did not know, is that Miriam bravely and continuously battled breast cancer since 1997. At the time of her diagnosis, her disease had already spread, and she was on constant treatment, from that time, until her sad death in March, 2009.

Her personal and professional achievements, which would have been considered outstanding in any working mum, must be seen as truly extraordinary given the quiet courageous battle which she waged throughout so much of her adult life.

Miriam had a major commitment to cancer research, and indeed, bravely took part in a number of research studies herself.

The Miriam Reynolds Breast Cancer Research Foundation is being set up to support on-going investigation into improved treatments for this dread disease. The Miriam Reynolds Breast Cancer Scholar will be a young scientist, who has completed training, and who already has, through their own research and publications, demonstrated the potential for research achievements.

We hope that you will be able to join us in this great activity, which will memorialize Miriam in a practical and, meaningful way, one which will be of benefit to current and future breast cancer sufferers.

CCRT go to the Movies

Events l

The CCRT would like to sincerely thank all who supported our recent fundraising event at Trinity College.   “Living Proof” – a film outlining the work of the innovative Oncologist Dr Dennis Slamon  was premiered.  The screening was preceded by a champagne and canapé reception and a talk by Professor John Crown.  The event was a great success and raised in excess of €60,000.

Living Proof Event

Events l

On Thursday night, April 23rd, CCRT held a reception followed by a charity premier screening of the motion picture “Living Proof”, a movie which tells the inspiring story of Dr. Dennis Slamon and his pioneering breast cancer research.

Dr. Slamon discovered that some patients had a particularly aggressive form of the disease due to an abnormality of a gene called “HER-2”. This discovery led directly to the development of Herceptin, a drug which has been life-saving for many women with the condition, but has also ushered in a whole new era of breast cancer research and treatment. As a result of his work, breast cancer research is increasingly focused on discovering better and gentler “targeted” treatments in place of older toxic chemotherapy drugs.
